Have you ever noticed how every fandom gradually develops its own sonic identity? A sound that becomes inseparable from the experience itself, instantly recognisable to those who belong to it. For Formula 1® fans, it is the unmistakable sound of engines roaring around the circuit.
Over time, fans online began hearing something unusual within that sound. To many, the roar of a Formula 1® engine seemed to echo a single word: “STINGGG.” What started as a viral fan observation has now become the foundation of a global electronic music release.
Electronic music producer Alan Walker has joined forces with Sting Energy® and Warner Music India for The Sting Within Me, a high-energy track inspired by the sound, speed, and emotion of Formula 1® . The track made its live debut during the Barcelona Grand Prix weekend, bringing together motorsport, music, and fan culture on one of racing’s biggest stages.
For Walker, the project was driven by his fascination with the atmosphere surrounding Formula 1® . “Formula 1® has a very unique atmosphere – engines, acceleration, tension, crowd energy and anticipation. The idea was to capture that feeling and turn it into music that fans can experience beyond the track,” he says.
The spark came from an unexpected source. While watching a video by Armin van Buuren, Walker came across a discussion about how Formula 1® engines appeared to sound remarkably similar to the word “STINGGG.”
“I came across a video from Armin van Buuren where he spoke about hearing ‘STINGGG’ in the sound of a Formula 1® engine, and I completely got hooked on how close it sounded,” Walker recalls. “From that moment, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Formula 1® has such a unique atmosphere, the anticipation before lights out, the intensity of the race and the emotion that comes with every moment. As a huge Formula 1® and motorsport fan myself, it felt like a natural fit. I honestly found myself wondering why nobody had done this sooner,” he adds.
Inspired by that discovery, Walker collaborated with Sting Energy® and Formula 1® to access a rich archive of engine sounds and race audio. Blending those recordings with his signature production style, he set out to create a track that mirrors the emotional journey of a Formula 1® race weekend.

“Formula 1® already sounds electronic to me,” Walker explains. “The engines have rhythm, the build-up, the atmosphere, the tension, everything has a rhythm. Once I heard the ‘STING’ connection, it was impossible to ignore. I wanted the track to hit with the same pressure as a race start. Going live with it in Barcelona made it even more surreal because you could feel that emotion among fans in real-time,” he reflects.
The project also saw Walker connect with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team driver George Russell during the creative process, whose insights added to the creation of the track.
While motorsport and electronic music can be seen increasingly intertwined in recent years, The Sting Within Me takes a different approach. Instead of simply placing music alongside Formula 1® , the track attempts to build music from Formula 1® itself, using the sounds and emotional rhythms of the sport as creative material.
The idea first gained traction through fans, something Eugene Willemsen, Chief Executive Officer of International Beverages, PepsiCo, believes was key to its evolution. “Last year, fans realised that Formula 1® sounds like STINGGG, and the response showed us just how naturally racing, sound and culture could collide,” he says. “What started as a viral moment quickly evolved into something much bigger — Sting becoming the sound of Formula 1® for fans around the world. With ‘The Sting Within Me’, we pushed that idea further, turning the raw energy of Formula 1® into something fans can stream, share and experience beyond the circuit. This is about bringing Formula 1® into culture in a way that feels immediate, social and built for a new generation of fans,” he explains.
The collaboration also reflects how Formula 1® continues to expand beyond the racetrack and into wider cultural conversations. “Formula 1® today is much more than what happens on track, it’s about the sounds, experiences and emotion you get when engaging with our sport,” says Emily Prazer, Chief Commercial Officer, Formula 1® . “STING’s new anthem is proof that the sport has grown far beyond the racetrack, with fans and consumers able to enjoy unique moments of the action in their everyday lives. Through this new track, Sting is helping more fans connect with one of the elements that makes the sport special – its visceral sound – and increase our ever-growing fanbase worldwide,” she adds. At its core, The Sting Within Me is a reminder of how musical inspiration can emerge from the most unexpected places. What began as a fan observation has evolved into a global electronic anthem, carrying the excitement of a Formula 1® weekend into playlists around the world. That idea sits at the heart of Walker’s vision for the track. Rather than simply creating a song inspired by motorsport, he wanted to create a new way for fans to engage with the sport itself. “The ambition is to let fans experience Formula 1® in a different way – not just as a sport they watch, but as something they can feel, share and connect with beyond the track,” he says.
In many ways, The Sting Within Me captures the growing intersection of music, sports, and internet culture. A viral fan discovery became a creative spark, a creative spark became a song, and that song has now found its place on one of motorsport’s biggest stages. For both music lovers and Formula 1® enthusiasts, it serves as a reminder that some of the most compelling creative ideas are often hidden in the sounds we hear every day.
