Chennai’s ‘In Between Sessions’ Deliver an Ambitious Jazz Fusion Debut with Vol. 01

Emerging from Chennai’s growing independent music ecosystem, In Between Sessions present their debut EP, In Between Sessions Vol. 01. Comprising twelve musicians and operating entirely independently, the collective blends jazz fusion, R&B influences, and contemporary instrumentation into a body of work that is expansive and intimate. Featuring a lineup of strings, guitars, keyboards, percussion, and drums, the EP embraces the spirit of collaboration. Across five instrumental tracks, the band demonstrates how melody, rhythm, and texture can communicate emotions just as vividly as lyrics.

Singularity

Opening the EP, “Singularity” establishes the band’s affinity for cinematic storytelling. Delicate melodic phrases and intricate plucking patterns intertwine to create a beautiful introduction, enriched by dizzying classical textures that gradually unfold. Midway through the track, the rhythm section takes command, shifting the focus away from melody and introducing violin-led passages that is adventurous. The composition continuously breaks away from predictable structures, moving between moments of comfort and rhythmic intensity. Despite the absence of vocals, the colourful melodies carry a remarkable emotional weight, communicating feelings and ideas with the same effectiveness that words often do.

Coastal Daydreams

As its title suggests, “Coastal Daydreams” evokes vivid imagery from the very first note. A tropical-inspired introduction gently drifts into mellow, seaside-inspired instrumentation, painting a scenic landscape through expressive guitar work. Throughout the track, the violin and electric guitar emerge as central characters, engaging in a musical conversation that feels organic and deeply evocative. One of the composition’s greatest strengths is its refusal to rely on a singular climax or chorus. Instead, every section possesses its own emotional identity, allowing the song to continuously evolve while maintaining a sense of fluidity.

Puddle Jump

“Puddle Jump” introduces a more playful energy into the EP. Driven by a prominent bass presence, the track carries a mischievous and adventurous spirit that distinguishes it from its predecessors. The violin frequently mirrors the role of traditional jazz horns, lending the composition an authentic jazz sensibility while maintaining the ensemble’s modern fusion approach. The song constantly shifts in character, moving from playful grooves into mesmerising piano that seamlessly merge with guitar textures. These transitions keep listeners engaged, creating a sense of unpredictability that becomes one of the track’s defining qualities.

Bonita

With “Bonita,” the collective explores a more rhythmically vibrant and globally influenced sound palette. Electronica-infused textures and an instantly memorable bell-like motif draw listeners in from the outset. Hand-pan-inspired elements blend effortlessly with Spanish-flavoured rhythmic patterns, while funky percussion and lush string arrangements provide depth and movement. The interplay between organic acoustic instrumentation and modern electronic elements allows the track to carve out its own identity within the EP. It is a composition that feels danceable and sophisticated, showcasing the band’s versatility as arrangers and performers.

Indify

“Indify” delivers one of the EP’s most confident statements. Funkier and more groove-oriented than the preceding track, it thrives on energetic rhythms, jazz-inspired percussion, and richly layered string arrangements. The composition feels assured in its direction, balancing intricate melodic ideas with a strong rhythmic foundation. As a finale, it succeeds in bringing the EP’s various influences together while maintaining a sense of forward momentum. The track’s confidence and cohesion make it a fitting conclusion to a record built on collaboration and musical exploration.

Conclusion

What makes In Between Sessions Vol. 01 particularly compelling is its commitment to storytelling through instrumentation. The collective uses melody, rhythm, texture, and arrangement to create emotional narratives that feel vivid and personal. For a debut release, In Between Sessions showcase remarkable musical chemistry and a clear artistic vision, offering a refreshing contribution to India’s evolving jazz fusion landscape.
