This year has been brutal to everyone in the music industry. One thing which kept us all going these past few months, or in fact through this entire year has been music. Despite the fact that the music industry was probably one of the first to shut down, and still not be able to reopen completely, Indian musicians have taken this time to let their creative juices flowing. Every day we see a plethora of new songs being released and we at the Indian Music Diaries are creating our monthly compilation of the latest releases in the music scene.
1. Pehchan Mujhe by Raeyna
Raeyna who derives his name from the Latin word Regina meaning Queen, a sign of royalty and highlights a certain sense of detachment from the rest of the population, is symbolic to the inability to of expressing oneself in traditional human notions. Pehchan Mujhe marks the second release of Raeyna. This energetic track is sure to lift up one’s mood and act as a motivational anthem with its powerful lyrics and upbeat lively music. In a world where someone doesn’t think twice before hating another person, the song teaches us to love the most important person in the world, i.e., ourselves.
2. Kho Gaye by Kammar ft. Dhi Harmony
Mumbai-based guitarist and composer Rahul Kammar who goes by the alias Kammar collaborated with Dhi Harmony for his single Kho Gaye. This song is about reaching out to people who are often lost and looking for an escape from reality as it will let them free-fall from all the mechanical world that’s around us and into a beautiful escape.
3. Sitaare by Aniken ft. Gaurav Tophakhane and Shreyas Iyengar
Pune-based music producer and composer Aniket Kate who goes by the moniker Aniken collaborated with Pune-based singer-songwriter Gaurav Tophakhane and saxophonist Shreyas Iyengar to release his debut track Sitaare. After infusing his influences of deep house music with other genres such as shoegaze, dream pop, retro synth, and ambient pop he constructed Sitaare. The song portrays the feeling and emotions behind the night skies as you drive into an aimless direction. With laid back retro beats, a calming saxophone, and luscious synth, this song is indeed part of the “drive music” category.
4. Lamhe by Zariya and Aseem
Pune-based Aseem and Zariya come together yet again to release their latest single Lamhe. This track is about the ever fleeting moments in life. The catchy tune and hook, along with poignant lyrics are sure to take the listener on a trip down memory lane and make them feel nostalgic about all the special moments in their life.
5. Let’s Escape (NIGEYO) by Drish T and Ameen Singh
Drishti Tandel who goes by the alias Drish T collaborated with guitarist Ameen Singh and drummer Raghav Bhutani to release this bi-lingual track Let’s Escape (NIGEYO) in Japanese and English. This neo-soul pop song has progressing/ post-rock guitar riffs with groovy drums. The song is about someone who has overcome a tough situation, and is ready to escape the fatalist mindset that they had got accustomed to.
6. A Better Place by Astral Dogs
Bangalore-based psychedelic rock band Astral Dogs release their debut single A Better Place. This song is about our yearning to reach a better place in body, mind and spirit – filled with love, peace, hope, wonder, gratitude; the feeling of having arrived “home” in its deepest sense. With luscious soundscapes, dreamy visuals and a chill vibe, the band successfully transcends the listener to “A Better Place,” giving them a calming trip.
7. Is It Sunny? by Vinay Kaushal ft. Shakthisree Gopalan
Pune-based guitarist and composer Vinay Kaushal released his latest track Is It Sunny? in collaboration with Shakthisree Gopalan. This sultry, pop, jazz love song describes the feeling of missing a loved one who is far away. The music video also stars Nupur Chaudhuri who is India’s first pole athlete to win a medal in an international pole championship.
8. Do/Don’t by Saachi
Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Saachi Rajadhyaksha who goes by her stage name Saachi released her first single for the year Do/Don’t. This track talks about us being obsessed with doing everything, and sometimes in the process of being ourselves, we end up losing out on doing something, eventually upsetting the people around us. In this pop song, laced with jazz tunes, Saachi perfectly makes the listener dwell upon ‘to do or not to do.’
9. Trail by Ardent Lights
Paritosh Shegaokar who goes by the moniker Ardent Lights is a music producer who has released his latest single Trail. Sticking to his usual style of music, this ambient track has the perfect chill vibe. With soothing soundscapes, the song can almost put the listener in a calming meditative state.
10. Lat by Aeke
Delhi-based rapper and hip-hop artist Aeke released his song Lat and a music video to compliment the song too. This track talks about the behavioural addictions such as social media addiction, smoking and sugar addiction in different age groups. These addictions have seen a sudden rise in the recent past and have also been a vital area of awareness in the fight against COVID to keep the immunity strong. This lo-fi track also has a hauntingly realistic video to compliment the song.
11. Dissociation by Ajuni
Chandigarh-based singer-songwriter, pianist and composer Anupreet Kaur who goes by the alias Ajuni released her second single Dissociation. This song is a dramatic ballad where she manages to have a seamless fusion between jazz and Indian classical by incorporating sitar along with the upbeat drums, basslines and synths. The lyrics are a result of her studying mental illness, as well as her personal struggles.
12. Dooriyaan by Shubumm
Delhi-based singer-songwriter and composer Shubham Chawla who goes by the moniker Shubumm released his latest single Dooriyaan. This track is about how little things and small banters can transform into bigger fights. It takes you on a musical ride to different phases in an argument. The mellifluous flute composition, along with the catchy chorus and powerful guitar make sit stand out from a basic bedroom arrangement.
13. Teri Kami by Shubham J
Mumbai-based singer-songwriter Shubham J released his latest single Teri Kami. His music predominantly consists of love songs where he tries to tell stories through his life experiences. This track is no different as it talks about the bittersweet memories of a past relationship which one may have to face due to the pandemic and eventually letting it go. Shubham’s sublimes vocals along with a mellow flute arrangement make the listener feel melancholic.
14. Aao Na by Siddhant Mishra
Singer-songwriter and music composer Siddhant Mishra released his latest single Aao Na. This ambient pop song has rock elements along with a dreamy soundscape, giving the illusion to the listeners that they are actually in a dream. This song talks about a dreamscape where you get the chance of spending time with someone you have always dreamt of being with, a hope that the dream could turn into reality someday or a wish that the dream never ends.
15. Jee Le by TSNR and Abhishek
Duo composer and artist TSNR collaborated with Pune-based singer Abhishek Kasegaonkar for their single Jee Le. This pop song is about the essence of living, the way of living freely, openly, and listening to your inner voice, and discovering the real individual that you are. The track features a catchy hook and prominent guitars and basslines.
