Alternate Hip-Hop in India is still severely under-appreciated and unacknowledged. The genre that encompasses around non-mainstream sounds still finds it hard to reach a larger and supportive audience. Amidst this framework, Devang and Arslan are two of the very few flag bearers of the sub-genre. Released on the 25th of June, “80, Portofino Street – EP”, sees a new and fresh approach to music as we know it. Performed by Devang and produced by Arslan, the EP features 6 tracks, 1 of which was released earlier last week.
Arslan’s production features different takes on the same sound that the project revolves around. His production features heavily sampled tracks that are quite instrumental. The beats create an unclear and unrevealing vibe to the track and seem to be beautifully hidden behind crackling sounds, this effect enhances the listening experience.
Devang’s poetic side is also showcased through this EP, concealed behind the beats, Devang’s grimy vocals contribute towards the sound the project carries. Moreover, his flow switches and winsome rhyme schemes celebrate the poetry he practices in his bars.
The name “80, Portofino Street” protrudes as it has a significant emotion to the artist’s love life. The theme of the project revolves around life itself, the different chapters talk about different instances the artist has faced and dealt with. This concept backed by the jazz sound the project highlights creates a promising after effect on the listeners.
The Pune based musicians have been working together since a year striving towards bringing out a new perspective to Indian Hip-Hop. This new sound solemnizes a unique outlook rather than the generic Pune Hip-Hop and the mainstream sonics that come out of the city.
