From Folk Metal to Hip-Hop: A Guide to Northeast India’s Diverse Music Landscape

As American Heavy Metal band Pantera’s vocalist Phil Anselmo once said, “Music is there for us to explore. To intentionally limit yourself to one, two, or three genres is limitation at its worst. Music is huge; it’s a gigantic history lesson, and if you are true music fan or a musician, you should explore it. It’s all right there in front of us,” it’s always a welcoming move when new genres are explored, either by a solo artist or a band. When it comes to  Northeast India’s musicscape, the same can be said, as a dynamic transformation has become evident in recent years. This change is characterised by the emergence of new genres, fusion of traditional sounds with contemporary music, and the rise of young, talented artists who are crafting magic out of music. Here’s a look at some of the exciting genres and trends shaping the music scene in Northeast India today-

1.Folk Metal

Northeast India’s folk music is having a moment, and it’s not just in the traditional circles. Metal bands are now mixing these timeless tunes with their own sound. Take Dymbur, for example— a Djent/Progressive metal band from Meghalaya, who is leading the charge by blending Khasi instruments like Duitara, Mieng, Kabom, and Kynshaw into their music. The result? A sound that’s fresh, fierce, and deeply rooted in the region’s rich musical heritage.

2.Rap and Hip-Hop

Rap and hip-hop are really making waves in Northeast India, especially among the youth. It’s more than just beats— it’s about telling powerful stories, tackling struggles, identity, and social issues head-on. Take Yelhomie, for instance, who mixes light-hearted themes with hard-hitting messages about the challenges in Manipuri society. Then there’s Moko Koza, who uses his rap skills to dive into the history and culture of Nagaland. And let’s not forget KoolD from Assam, who drops bars about everything from today’s society to personal introspection. The rise of rap and hip-hop in Northeast India shows how global music vibes are blending seamlessly with local roots, creating something truly unique.
