‘Sediments’ by Sangram Malik: A Powerful Blend of Electronic, Rock, and Pop

Chandigarh-based artist Sangram Malik is an emerging force in India’s independent music scene. As a singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, he has carved out a unique space with his poignant lyrics and authentic storytelling. His ability to forge deep connections through simple yet powerful words, combined with his versatility as a one-man band handling lead guitar, bass, and vocals, showcases an artist with immense potential. Given his trajectory, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Malik emerge as a major voice in the industry in the coming years.

His latest EP “Sediments,” released on December 20, 2024, promises to be a thoughtful exploration of sound, culture, and emotion. The four-track EP, available on major streaming platforms and Bandcamp, stands out for its introspective approach and passionate delivery. Following his successful nationwide Sediments Tour in September, where he impressed audiences with his amazing live performances, this EP represents what’s next for Malik’s artistic journey.

Drawing from diverse influences, Sangram crafts a unique sound that’s a mix of electronic, rock, and pop elements. In “Sediments,” you really get to see what this powerhouse artist can do. Each track tells its own story, mixing his classical roots with modern beats and emotional depth.

The EP opens with “Icebath,” a meditative tribute to Sangram’s Indian classical heritage. The track features sitar and tabla that create an almost heavenly atmosphere. While the arrangement starts grand, it gently mellows into something more intimate. What makes it special are the little touches: a dog barking in the background, splashing water, street sounds. These everyday moments, combined with the rich instrumental work, make “Icebath” feel both sacred and wonderfully human.

‘Malhar Dub’ opens with a punch: “It’s a blessing when people gather and a curse when they scatter.” Composed during a tough time, this track lets us peek into Sangram’s raw emotions. He weaves together solid dub basslines with the soul-stirring Rabab and classical Raag Malhar, creating something that feels both ancient and new. Rain patters in the background while mechanical whirs and high notes float through the mix. What makes this track special is how Sangram throws together sounds you’d never expect to work – but they do, brilliantly. The Rabab’s Middle Eastern twang adds this haunting touch that sticks with you long after the song ends. 

“GAIA” brings a fresh energy to the EP, born from Sangram’s experience at the GAIA Festival in Manali. The track opens with his gentle humming before blooming into a playful mix of nature’s soundtrack – chirping birds, rivulets gushing – and clever electronic beats. It’s like taking a walk through a magical forest where you can hear synths and classical ragas played together. Sangram weaves his voice through the track, sometimes breaking into traditional Indian melodies that float above the modern production. The whole thing feels both wild and carefully crafted, perfect for losing yourself on a mountain trail or closing your eyes under a starlit sky. It’s a love letter to the outdoors that somehow makes electronic music feel as natural as breathing.

“Samudra” closes the EP with an ode to the ocean and Sangram’s Indian classical roots. The track sparkles with payal (anklet) chimes, gentle flute melodies, and electronic beats that feel like waves washing over you. The whole thing moves like a Sufi dance, spinning between folk traditions and modern sounds he gathered across India. It’s a five-minute journey that might just make you forget where you are for a moment. When the final note fades, you’re left feeling lighter, cleaner somehow. Keep an eye on this artist – he’s truly a hidden gem.
