Release Spotlight #105 – Acoustic Folk, Indie Pop, Experimental Music & More!

The pulse of the independent circuit is best felt through its diversity, where every day brings a collision of genres that somehow find a collective resonance. This latest batch of releases serves as a testament to that range, capturing a curated journey through the latest sonic experiments and heartfelt stories emerging from the scene, offering a little something for every melophile.

1. When the Water was sweet – Himanshu Chavan

When the Water was sweet is a tender acoustic folk performance captured live in an old ancestral home. The song features the matka (earthen pot) as a central instrument, aiming to tell the honest story of this traditional household object through a nostalgic and contemplative lens. This live acoustic version serves as the second single from Himanshu’s upcoming EP.

2. Gasoline – MUKI

This indie/alt-rock number explores the quiet intensity of emotional burnout in relationships where the love remains but the spark has faded. Drawing influence from soulful songwriters, the track balances raw, lyric-driven intimacy with textures built for the stage. It serves as the opening statement for MUKI’s debut project, the Trampoline.

3. Kaagaz – Anant Goyal

Kaagaz is a melodic indie number that finds its strength in the delicate art of surrendering to life’s flow. Reminiscent of indie folk giants like Gregory Alan Isakov and The Paper Kites, the single acts as a centrepiece for Anant’s upcoming EP, Kaagaz Ki Nav. It explores the idea that true resilience often looks like letting go rather than resisting the current.

4. Lamhe – Afnan Ali Sebai, GOTHAM S

Rooted in soft emotional reflection, this Hindi indie track is a journey through personal nostalgia. It beautifully captures the shifting dynamics of closeness and distance that define our most cherished family memories.

5. Dua – Desikan Gopalan

Dua is a melodic, emotionally driven exploration of celebrating the life of a loved one who is no longer present. The track blends modern indie sensibilities with traditional Indian musical roots, creating a space for both mourning and celebration. It serves as a sincere reflection of Desikan’s signature sound and deep emotional vulnerability.

6. Who You Are – RANJ, Clifr

This song is a fierce declaration of identity that traces the experience of navigating a world designed to silence marginalised voices. Produced by Clifr, it weaves gritty, sample-driven hip hop with deep-rooted Tamil elements and a restless, disco-like pulse. It is an unapologetic record that feels constantly alive, shifting, and refusing to settle for less.

7. Figments – Mushroom Lake

This four-track EP explores the thin, often blurred line between imagination and reality through expansive guitar effects and ambient passages. Drawing inspiration from legendary progressive and post-rock acts, the project embodies unique drum grooves and evolving soundscapes. It captures the essence of the band’s growth and their current sonic identity.

8. Migration – When Hush Falls

It is an experimental ambient release inspired by the inner landscape of human transition and the flight of migratory birds. The EP features field recordings captured across Assam and India, blending the santoor with subtle electronics and guitar. Designed as a continuous listening experience, it reflects the phases of departure, uncertainty, and eventual renewal.

9. Migrating Dunes – Mirager

Migrating Dunes is where Indian ragas meet funky neo-psychedelic grooves, personifying the act of “dancing within chaos.” Inspired by the sounds of Khruangbin & Arc De Soleil, this EP blends funky rhythms and surfy grooves, utilising sitars, tablas, and synths to create a hypnotic, meditative atmosphere.

10. Sleep Demon – Kambli

Written as a way to channel the frustration of frequent sleep paralysis, this single personifies the “demon” that haunts the subconscious. The track is a dark, atmospheric entry that serves as a precursor to Kambli’s upcoming full-length album. It provides a raw, sonic outlet for an experience that is often terrifying and difficult to articulate.

11. Bombay Drama – Tech Panda, Kenzani

A menacing yet infectious work, Bombay Drama feels like the sonic equivalent of a 70s gangster movie. With a dark, malevolent vibe and a groove that is impossible to resist, the track serves as a moody antidote to the ordinary. It showcases the duo’s ability to blend vintage cinematic atmosphere with modern electronic production.

12. Udja Bekhabar – Nimish Shah, Vidhya Gopal, Karan Patel

This light-hearted Hindi indie-pop number is built on bright acoustic guitars, warm synth bass, and airy textures. Originally part of a shelved project, the song took on a life of its own, celebrating the beauty of dreaming big and finding joy in simplicity. It is a song about flying free and letting good feelings take over.

13. Where to Go – Vacoustics

Where to Go is an emotionally honest acoustic track that tackles the specific anxiety of feeling lost in your 20s. It explores themes of self-doubt and the pressure of comparison when everyone else seems to have their lives mapped out. The song resonates with anyone navigating the transition into adulthood without a clear sense of direction.

14. Rukna Nahin Hai – Akash Kaushal, Bharath

With Rukna Nahin Hai, a 9-track album, the listener can lean into deeper reflection and self-discovery. Moving beyond simple romance, the album retains a signature acoustic sound and sincere songwriting. It delivers a heartfelt message of perseverance, offering comfort through its profound and deeply personal lyrical themes.

15. Insaan – Aaditya Laddha & Aaina

Insaan is a groove-dominated collaboration that masks a sharp critique of modern capitalism behind an easy-listening vibe. The track explores the contradiction of having a good time while acknowledging the ways everyday life is being eroded. It features London-based singer/songwriter Aaina, maintaining a light sonic energy while delivering a heavy social message.
