Why is SAM a great place to study music?

Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music, Tamil Nadu offers a comprehensive range of courses for a musician looking to pave their way into the music industry.  The artistic green campus which offers students the best space for their creativity and state of the art infrastructure which includes two large recital halls aren’t the best takeaways here. CURRENT FACULTY 

Peter Farrell is a part of the guitar faculty at SAM. He is a protégée of legendary jazz guitarist George Benson. Farrell is best known for his excellence with jazz guitar. He co-designed the curriculum for the ‘George Benson Guitar Method Book’.

Patricia Laura Simon is a singer, songwriter from Argentina. Patricia is a graduate from EMC Contemporary Music School, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts and also holds a master’s degree in Contemporary Studio Performance from Valencia, Spain.  She is currently based in India. She is learning Hindustani Classical Music under the guidance of Manjusha Patil. She is a part of the voice faculty at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music.    

Douglas “ShakerHand” Las  Casas is a part of the drums faculty at SAM. He is a known Brazilian drummer one of the most prominent Brazilian drummers.  Las Casas has studied the Moeller technique, traditional grip, jazz and Brazilian music which earned him the nickname of ‘ShakerHand’. His extensive work with Jazz and Brazilian music has helped him gain recognition. He also has three video classes called ‘Cutting Path’ ranging through basic, intermediate and advanced levels. Las Casas is currently a part of the JazzPira Project   

David Loubeh is a part of the piano faculty at SAM.  He is an ace jazz pianist from Brazil. Loubeh trained with Brazil’s classical maestros José   Eduardo Martins and Gilberto Tinetti. Loubeh is currently working on a project to reinvent ear training for musicians. His ways cause a strong shift in musical comprehension, audition, and musical performance.    

Sreyas Narayanun is a part of the Carnatic voice faculty.  Earlier known as C.B. Ramanaryanan, he is a Carnatic vocalist and an ‘A’ grade artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Chennai.   He has toured the country widely and has also performed in Australia, Kenya and The Gulf.  Some of the awards and titles received by him are Best Main Artiste award from YACM(1988), Vishwapriya from Narada Gana Sabha(1994), Best Musician award from Music Academy(1996, 1998, 2001), Yuva Kala Bharathi from Bharat Kalachar(1999).  

Umayalpurm Mali is a part of the carnatic rhythm faculty at SAM. He is a mridangam player and was a disciple of Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer and Umayalpuram Sivaraman.  He has toured the globe widely and worked with T.M Krishna, Vijay Siva, T.N Krishnan and many others.  He was a scholar in residence at Amherst College. He was invited by Harvard University to be an ‘Artiste in Residence’ in 2010. He was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship in 2012 and researched on ‘the art of improvisation’.

World Class Musicians at SAM

SAM has had a stunning roster of performing musicians as faculty and guest speakers. The guest faculty at SAM has included five-time Grammy Awards Winner, three-time Bass Player of The Year winner from Bass Player Magazine and one of the Top 10 bassists of all time as ranked by Rolling Stones magazine, Victor Wooten.    American keyboardist and composer, best known as a member of the bands Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment, two time Grammy nominee, Jordan Rudess, has also been part of the guest faculty.  The guest faculty for drums has included German drummer, singer and clinician, Benny Greb. Greb performed at the Modern Drummer Festival in 2010, he is mostly seen playing with The Ron Spielman Trio, The Benny Greb Brass Band and Sabri Tulug Tirpan, Jerobeam, Wayne Krantz and Storm & Wasser.  SAM has also had guest faculty like Ustaad Shujat Khan, Ustad Fazal Qureshi , Loy Mendonsa, Ehsaan Noorani, Mohini Dey and  Unni Krishnan in the past.  

ALUMNI 

SAM is proud to have alumni who are now famous within the music industry. Some of them are: Achyuth Jaigopal, batch of 2014 and co-founder of ‘When Chai Met Toast’  Alyssa Mendonsa, batch of 2011 and a Bollywood playback singer. She has worked with music directors like Ehsaan Noorani, Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa.  The Beer Puppets, batch of 2014, a Mumbai based Neo Soul band.  Rachael Varghese, batch of 2012, and a Bollywood playback singer.
