“Do Good. Be Kind” by fen: An Intimate and Universal Exploration of Love, Loss, and Hope Through Music

Can an album simultaneously evoke the serenity of a forest and the chaotic energy of an industrial soundscape? Fenjo Sebastian’s Do Good. Be Kind (DGBK) not only achieves this but transcends expectations.

Fenjo Sebastian, or fen, is a Bangalore-based artist whose music defies easy categorization. His sound is a captivating blend of organic textures and raw emotion, drawing inspiration from the vastness of nature—a striking contrast to his urban surroundings. One fan aptly described his music as “Transcending. Terrestrial. Hallucinative,” a summation I wholeheartedly agree with.

The EP, Do Good. Be Kind, is a deeply personal project, yet its themes of love, loss, and hope resonate universally. Co-produced and mixed by Leslie Charles and mastered by GRAMMY® nominated Kimberly Rosen, the album is a testament to both Fen’s talent and the collaborative artistry involved.

“Floof Poof” opens the EP with a rustic charm; the ukulele’s gentle strums evolve into a rich soundscape with the addition of piano. The song’s intimate beginning explodes into a powerful, spiritual climax—a truly remarkable feat. It’s a heartfelt thank you, a soothing balm for the soul, and a perfect introduction to fen’s unique style.

The second track ‘Iris flower’ showcases fen’s signature blend of cosmic soundscapes and intimate lyricism. The song is atmospheric, its poetic lyrics painting vivid pictures. A crescendo builds to a breathtaking cosmic climax, transporting the listener before gracefully returning to a serene conclusion. The masterful mixing and mastering ensure every note is perfectly placed, creating a holistic soundscape.

‘Revelation’ is my personal favorite. Slightly upbeat, it possesses an oceanic quality—soothing yet powerful. Written for the darker times, it transcends contemporary production with its theatrical flair. The mid-section hits like a tidal wave, a stunning blend of industrial synths and driving beats. The music is complex yet serene, lifting the spirits. It’s transcendental without being ethereal. His masterful use of noise—transforming static radio sounds into musical elements—is truly amazing.

‘Do Good. Be Kind,’ the closing track, begins with melancholic piano and Fen’s gentle vocals, evoking a sense of annihilation and transformation. The sounds of coastal winds weave a dark, atmospheric tapestry. The music ebbs and flows, mirroring life’s crests and troughs, before a glimmer of light emerges. It’s a journey of reflection, a poignant homage to those who’ve helped shape the artist. This final track beautifully captures the EP’s message: a call for empathy, a reminder to embrace kindness. The album’s ability to touch the deepest parts of our souls and connect us to nature is remarkable. fen’s debut is a triumph of artistry and emotion, a bold statement that promises a bright future for this exceptionally talented musician.
